The second part of this millinery class will be focused on making wire-frame for matching your ribbon creation and for forming the hat. Both classic styles (evoking Bes-Ben era) and modern styles can be achieved with this unique technique.
Supplies:
Petersham – 25mm / 1” / #5 – 8 meters • Petersham must be a firm ribbon such as cotton, polyester, or a blend. • Do NOT use a soft drapey 100% rayon or 100% viscose for the workshop, although rayon or viscose in a blend is okay. Soft Petersham and other ribbon work fine once skill is mastered, but can be hard to manage as a beginner. • Do NOT use black coloured ribbon, it is too hard to see while learning.
– Tulle (net) – 30 cm/ 12” square • Neutral colour – white, ivory, grey or brown, or hair colour.
– Galvanized wire – 1 meter The 1.6mm thick (16 gauge) is ideal, It is not expensive. In the US I’ve used: https://www.homedepot.com/p/OOK-25-ft-55-lb-16-Gauge- Galvanized-Steel-Wire-50130/100242844 • Uncoated and uncovered. • Not a twisted rope style or chain, just basic wire. • Firm to hold shape, not so hard you cannot bend, not too pliable. Armature wire is usually too soft.
